Steering column locking nut socket

The Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO/Dodge Stealth steering rack contains a spring loaded piston that is meant to remove any slack in the steering.

When the bearing surface on the end of the piston wears out the piston needs to be replaced before it scores/damages the steering rack.

In order to remove the piston an oddly shaped square locking nut first needs to be removed. There is very little space available around the locking nut so we have designed a special steel socket to make this job easier.

We usually try to keep a few of these in stock, the price is 40$ plus shipping. If you want to order one contact us.

This is the whole preload assembly which can be accessed when the locking nut has been removed and the adjustment nut has been unscrewed.

When adjusting the preload it's always a good idea to check the condition of the piston as a worn piston may damage the steering rack.

The photo below is a comparison of a worn out piston and a brand new one from Mitsubishi.

If you need to buy a new piston the part number from Mitsubishi is 4410A394

Here is a YouTube video kindly made by one of our customers that shows how the socket it used. The video also shows how much play he was able to remove from the steering rack of his car.
